Tasting Note: Enticing aromas of black cherry, black currant and violet are allied to flavors of iron, wet earth and spice. This is loaded with fruit, vibrant acidity and well-mannered tannins. Shows terrific harmony now, yet possesses the structure to age. The long, mouthwatering finish extends the dark fruit and minerally elements. Best from 2021 through 2040. —B.S.

ABOUT THIS WINE: This Tuscan red offers exceptional value: The average price of a wine rated 97 points in 2019 was $440. It’s made from 100 percent Sangiovese grapes sourced from eight old-vine parcels among Volpaia’s 116 acres of organically farmed vineyards. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, it ages for 24 months in a mix of 3,000-liter casks (80 percent) and older French barriques (20 percent). An additional six months of bottle refinement follows the bottling.
